ent! Internetproviders Youngbrunettessucks De A0g Young Brunettes SucksHe’s a veteran of several BIG DAY OUTs, and DJ SIR-VERE returns once more for 2006 to bring you the cutting edge of international hip hop. From humble beginnings as a mobile disc jockey at the age of 15, SIR-VERE has become one of the leading and most respected djs in New Zealand’s hip hop community, and he’s not satisfied with constant dj work – SIR-VERE is also responsible for running the NZ branch of the ITF competition and promoting touring international djs. He’s a permanent fixture on Mai FM and his Major Flavours albums have been massive hits, leading to other mixes including Mai FM’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ release.
BAITERCELL & SCHUMACHER are back for BIG DAY OUT 2006 and they’ll take great pleasure in smashing the boiler-room to pieces with their distinctive brand of drum n bass and hip-hop infused breaks. The duo have been prominent on the breaks scene for a few years now with numerous b-net hits and a healthy output of remix efforts ranging from Supergroove to Katchafire, as well as winning a swag of nominations and awards. B & S’ latest album The Wall of Bass Technique hit number one on the independent chart earlier this year and the pair were recently added to the roster of UK label Resin Records.
Two acronyms have shaped underground electronic music for the past few years: LCD Soundsystem and DFA. Behind them both is DJ JAMES MURPHY (USA), a producer DJ and musician who is the godfather of punk-funk, the ruler of dancefloors around the world, whether you’re a skinny punker from Brooklyn or a high-heeled clubber in Auckland. A veteran of punk, rock and disco, Murphy’s beats and riffs will chain you to the dancefloor. The question is: will you be able to stop dancing?
New kids on the block END OF FASHION will step up for the BIG DAY OUT in 2006, bringing along their anthemic, catchy brand of pop-rock. Their stick-in-your-head choruses and punchy, unforgettable tunes make this awesome Perth foursome one hell of an item. Justin, Rodney, Nick and Tom will thrill BIG DAY OUT audiences with their timeless get-go rock’n’roll that will make you want to join in, sing along, shake it down – O Yeah!
Originally a UK-based kiwi electronic duo consisting of Radio One and MTV DJ Zane Lowe and Hamish Clark, BREAKS CO-OP have evolved with the release of their double platinum second album, The Sound Inside. With its own hybrid genre-crossing style making for stunning results, the band's sound is as diverse and tasty as its record collection which stretches from DJ Shadow to Crosby, Stills & Nash, and led by the soulful voice of singer Andy Lovegrove, single ‘The Otherside’ was Single of the Year at the NZ Music Awards. The BREAKS CO-OP live band features Andy and Hamish, plus the brilliant musicianship of Goodshirt’s Rodney Fisher, Trinity Rootsman Rio Hemopo and drummer Tom Atkinson of SJD and One Million Dollars.
If you took The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and forced it to breed with a copy of Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique, you’d end up with Boston rapper EDAN (USA). More than merely an MC, EDAN is a producer, DJ and artist of sounds that turn hip hop into a psychedelic landscape that pushes the boundaries of beats and rhymes. This year’s Beauty and the Beat was revered by rap fans wanting something more of music than bling and BS, as well as rock fans who saw EDAN as Syd Barrett with a sampler. EDAN doesn’t just keep it real, he keeps it surreal.
In a world where bling and booty are part of the rap-pop bandwagon, JEAN GRAE (USA) throws a well-deserved spanner in the works. The New York-based MC takes to the female rap stereotype with a hammer, knocking it out with smooth rhymes and a soulful conscience. Born in South Africa at the height of the 1976 Soweto riots, it’s as though JEAN GRAE absorbed the political tension around her and took it as her birthright. And you can hear it in her 10 years of recording with everyone from The Roots to Talib Kweli and the unstoppable presence she has on stage.
From Cincinnati to BIG DAY OUT come THE GREENHORNES (USA), an authentic rock’n’roll trio with harmonies that drip honey, psychedelic leanings to sweep you off your feet and a stomping good dose of garage rockin’ blues. No strangers to the big stages – 2005 has seen the threesome criss-cross North America with good mates The White Stripes – THE GREENHORNES have also mixed it with the big names, recording with the likes of Brendan Benson, Loretta Lynn and Jack White himself. But with their strong tunes and updated take on the classic sounds of the ‘60s, it won’t take long for THE GREENHORNES to carve their own name in the sand of this Australasian summer.
Although THE SNEAKS prefer to call themselves X-ray Ninja enthusiasts, they’ve been called the most exciting new band in New Zealand and they’ve got the ‘Most Promising New Act’ gong from this year’s bNet Awards to prove it. Having carved out a strong presence in Auckland with their unique live shows, distinctive stage presence and downright infectious indie pop tunes, THE SNEAKS take their place in the BIG DAY OUT lineup for the first time in 2006. Listing their influences as Prince, Fugazi, Pavement, Africa 70 and the 1910 Fruitgum Company (with some idle cheerleader zombie daydreaming), THE SNEAKS are chaotic noise but they’re also more hooks per minute than most achieve in a lifetime.
Underground heavyweights KITSCH have been around for a decade now and have just released their third album The Burning Ground on Auckland’s stalwart indie 1157 Records. The album was produced by the band with long-term collaborator and bassist Evan Short, notorious for his work as one half of the drum’n’bass colossus that is Concord Dawn. Having played the Warped Tour and shared the stage with more legends than you could tattoo on a hardcore kid’s arms and neck, these guys play some of the most highly emotive, amped to eleven punk rock in this corner of the world.
First appearing in the early 80s as a spinoff to classic Flying Nun band the Clean, THE BATS are bringing it to BIG DAY OUT to show the kids how it’s done. Their jangle-pop sound ranges from light, diaphanous guitar-based psychedelia through to rousing, bittersweet hymns, from melancholy chorales for the disenfranchised to electric sea shanties full of foreboding, from upbeat amplified folk music for belligerent morris dancers to light “progressive rock”. They’ve continually breathed new life into their repertoire, most recently with their first album in ten years, At The National Grid.
